Knowing your helicopters limits is the key in distinguishing what is safe and what is a risky manoeuvre. 1 hour This presentation is one of the more technical in the series. From a pilots perspective, this is also the one which will impart sound principles that can help keep you out of trouble. The helicopter is still a relatively new invention, however recurring accidents have highlighted several weaknesses of this machine. The need for the pilot to be acutely aware of aerodynamic consequences of a heavy spinning disc of metal is demonstrated with clear diagrams and explained in the briefs. Have you ever wondered why a helicopter tends to drift to the advancing blades side on lift-off? Or have you asked what is the point of having the tail rotor on a pylon? and why do only some helicopters use this design? The briefs will answer all these questions. Other topics such as Torque Effect, Recirculation, Ground Resonance, and the feared and dreaded Dynamic Rollover are laid out and dissected for your benefit. The more you know about these, the more you learn what sort of situations to keep away from, as well as how to best recover should they occur. Knowing your helicopters limits is the key in distinguishing what is safe and what is a risky manoeuvre. There are some useful airmanship considerations, such as the Hover Check, as well as a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of a 3 and a 5 foot skid height hover. The real fun begins with the flying sequences, where the hover patterns, pedal turns, turns about the nose, and flying backwards is demonstrated. You will learn that the ability to do a perfect turn about the tail can be a very useful skill when manoeuvring for position in a confined area. This is where a pilots training really begins to become a reality. PAL and NTSC formats supported on all NEW DVD machines will play these DVD's. Your laptop will play the DVD's beautifully.
